Chart-topping single in memory of Scott Gilhooly raises much needed funds

The community champion’s cover of Only You, by Yazoo was released as a charity single to continue his fundraising mission for Essex homeless charity, Hope House (Braintree). Scott had originally covered the iconic 80’s song at his pub the Swiss Bell Braintree, which hosted popular ‘open mic’ events. Little did he or anyone know sometime later he was to top the charts, knocking Gaga off the top spot, landing a No.1 on multiple streaming platforms including iTunes and Amazon, beating the originals No.2 position in the UK charts.

The cover performed by Scott, a music lover, had been recorded and resurfaced following his sad passing, when his life was tragically taken on 17th May 2020 at his pub in Braintree. With a whole community shocked and saddened by the news, close friends came forward to continue what Scott was most passionate about – supporting the community and helping others. A decision was made to release Scott’s version of Only You as a charity single to help raise money for the local homeless charity he had been supporting, with all proceeds from the sale of the track donated to Hope House.

Friends David, Vikki and Sarah quickly prepared to get the song ready for release, reaching out to local media outlets to raise awareness and local radio stations for air-play. Despite their hard work and efforts they never prepared for what was to come, creeping into the UK charts at No.53 which was an incredible achievement. Scott’s legacy firmly etched in UK chart history, however Scott continued to steadily climb as downloads of his version ‘Only You’ soared, going international and landing the UK No.1 top spot, ironically on the very day he was laid to rest, June 11th 2020.

Several months following the release, data is now being collated by a music analyst and all proceeds are now reaching the Braintree based charity. Less licence and associated professional fees, Hope House has received their first donation instalment of £679.47 for the period 8th June to 28th July 2020 with further payments expected and the song still available to download & stream on all digital platforms.
